More changes for bmi Diamond Club

2nd Dec 2009

bmi has announced a radical overhaul of it's Diamond Club Frequent Flyer scheme. Many upgrade perks have been axed, and all the old paper upgrade vouchers have now been made worthless. However there is a new logo.

Instead of the old Gold Upgrade vouchers, you get four online complimentary upgrade vouchers. You can not see how many you have online, and you have to call up and book to use them: you can't take the option at the airport. These upgrades can now be booked and confirmed between seven days and 24 hours in advance of departure.

You can now upgrade using miles, as long as your ticket is booked in the expensive flexible U, L, Y, S, O or B classes. Economy to Business upgrades cost 10,000 miles to Russia & Ukraine, 15,000 miles to Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Iran, and 20,000 miles to Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ethiopia. Around what remains of the network domestically & to Europe it's 5,000 miles.

There is a new Family membership scheme, whereby up to eight family members can combine destinations miles. bmi says this will also include "staff such as nannies and security".

The Diamond Club also has a new look - removing the bmi logo. There is some suggestion that this will make it easier to sell the Frequent Flyer scheme, or merge it with Lufthansa's Miles & More, when the time comes. Members are being sent a new pack, in a large black envelope with embosed airport locations that bmi flies to. It has with several cards detailing part of bmi's new service, and including four upgrade vouchers for the new bmi car partner, Europcar, two luggage tabs with new style strings, and the new black frequent flyer card (without a logo).
