Alaska Airlines First Class lounges - Alaska Airlines Board Room

News: American Airlines Admirals Club members are now able to access Alaska Airlines Board Room lounges in Portland, Seattle and Anchorage.

Alaska Airlines has its own set of Lounges, called the Board Room. Although fairly non-descript compared to the rest of the world, in the US they are relatively plush with some OK facilities.

Dedicated Alaska Airways lounge locations are Anchorage, Portland, Seattle. Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

The Board Rooms offer complimentary beer, wine, and cocktails, although in the US tradition, these are the 'house' variants, rather than anything you might have heard of.

Alaska Airlines boardroom membership is expensive. To enter the Alaska Airlines Board Room you can buy membership for a year at US$450 - quite steep. Alaska Airlines board room access is also possible with a First class ticket (purchased or award First Class (F or A classes of service) only) or a daypass costs $45.

Because Alaska isn't part of any major alliances, gaining access can be a problem, but Qantas elite members gain entrance, and American Airlines Admirals Club members can now access Alaska Airlines Board Room lounges in Portland, Seattle and Anchorage. Indeed, compared to the down at heel AA clubs, the Board Room lounges offer the perk of two guests, rather than being limited to one guest - and there are fresh pancakes.

Seattle Alaska Airlines Board Room bar entrance
The Alaska Airlines boardroom Seattle is pretty good; a world away from the often chaotic (damp, grey and miserable) SeaTac airport. Mind you, it's not very easy to find, with just a small door inset into the wall.

The Alaska Airlines boardroom Seattle is a lovely, two level lounge, with a great view of the airport apron, runway, and the distant mountains. Alas it is also often fairly crowded, particularly on the ground floor which most people use: the stairs are hidden away by reception, and are quite steep.

At the top of the stairs the board room opens out, but because it has more of a club away from home feel upstairs, the upper first floor is more noisy, with passengers chatting on their phones.

On each floor there is just one large room, with comfy chairs in the middle, and a shelf running around the windows looking out at the rain. On the inner wall there is a small corridor with toilets and the bar: next to the door into this there is the 'snack' counter, but don't expect much here.

There are identical bars on both floors, and in the typical American way, the bars are little more than serving hatches through to the service areas. These bars are staffed, with free beer (including Alaskan Amber), wine, and cocktails (vodka based only). However if you want wine or spirits you've heard of, you need to pay $5 a pop. The bar staff expect a tip too, but Alaska Airlines boardroom Seattle reviews generally note that the bar staff in Seattle are quite friendly, and often have a free cocktail of the month.

Seattle boardroom Food is also, as you would expect, pretty basic. There are some free snacks, with nuts, biscuits, vegetarian chili, fruit, carrots and Caesar dipping sauces. Don't however miss the amazing free pancake machine, next to which there is a jar of maple syrup and a pot of strawberry jam.

Los Angeles Alaska Airlines Board Room - LAX

Location: Terminal 6 on the mezzanine level near gate 64 Open: 0500-2200
Access for First Class, Alaska Airlines Boardroom members
The Los Angeles Alaska Airlines Board Room is a world away from its Seattle cousin - it is less gloomy, and there isn't the constant drip of rain drops for example.

The LAX board room has recently moved from Terminal 3 to terminal 6, and so it is surprisingly new.

The lounge is basically one small box, crammed with large furniture such as bog leather armchairs. Against the windows (with a great view of gate 66) there is a shelf, also with big tall bar stool type chairs. In the middle there is a row of three stone top tables.

The bar is lovely in the Los Angeles Alaska Airlines Board Room - it avoids the serving hatch style in other board rooms; instead it has a large stone top, with four beers on draft pump handles, including Blue Moon and Budweiser.

Food is basic, with fruit and biscuits, and the usual pancake machine. Salads are good, with two (no less! Yes, two!) types of dressing in the fridge.

There are a dozen work cubicles, and two computers. Wifi is free.
